Cops zero in on type of new motorcycle to purchase

PETALING JAYA: Police have identified the model of motorcycle to be used by the Motorcycle Patrolling Unit to improve security in residential areas.

Sources at Bukit Aman said they had already identified the model and were discussing this with Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar.

“The motorcycle is of mid-range capacity, capable of patrolling the streets with ease,” said a source, adding that there were finer details to study before a decision is made.

The IGP is expected to make an announcement on the matter tomorow.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced an RM20mil allocation for the motorcyle unit under Budget 2013.

Meanwhile, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said the Government would concentrate on the placing of CCTV cameras in Kedah and Perak.

Among the proposals under security in the Budget were additional CCTV cameras for 25 urban local authorities in the country.

CCTVs are currently placed in several districts in Selangor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

“The increase in cameras is neccessary to combat street crimes. They can be great help to the police,” he said in Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam yesterday.

On a separate matter, Abu Seman said Malaysia had been ranked as the third safest place in Asia, behind New Zealand and Australia under the Global Peace Index (GPI).
